Coronavirus: India prepares for Vaccine Storage and Dissemination

Coronavirus- A word that has been added to the modern dictionary and found its place among the most critical and overtly used syllables in the world today. Since December the world has been reeling under the impact of this deadly contractive virus which spreads through surface contamination and leads to the generation of serious respiratory disorder in the human lungs caused by the impact of the Sars Cov 2 Virus.

Spreading its tentacles all across America, Europe, and Asia, it has been the biggest menace that humanity collectively has ever faced post the Spanish flu. It has had detrimental impacts on the economy with shutdowns to spread the virus, economic and diplomatic sanctions, and prevention of cross-border travel leading to the stoppage of all economic activities. With the United States of America being the epicenter of the virus post-China and Europe, India has also been severely impacted by the effects of the deadly virus.

However, with vaccine trials taking place in the country, scientists involved day and night to find a feasible solution to the virus, India is hopeful of designing a virus or importing it from the other countries involved in a vaccine trial. India has joined the Covax agreement with some of the top economies of the world like the United States of America and China, an agreement ratifying the transportation of vaccines.

Serum Institute of India, holding the largest capacity for vaccine storage has also been working vigorously to identify a solution. India has also been involved with the other premier vaccine trials taking place in the world like the one at Oxford University in England, vaccine trial by Pharmaceutical Giant in America Pfizer and German Giant N BioTech, AstraZeneca and Sputnik V in Russia. However, the Indian economy is faced with the following challenges in the case of vaccine production & the logistic sector.

Problems of Storage Facilities at Ultra-Low Temperature

The vaccine that will be produced requires ultra-low temperature areas to store the vaccine before it is discharged into the market and organized categorically into billions of doses, a specification which is an important criterion for an extremely populous country like India. Generally, vaccines are stored at temperatures up to 7-8°Celsius. However, there are some vaccines that operate at a much lower temperature of 2° Celsius.

There are some preliminary vaccines as well that need to be stored at minus 80 degrees celsius. Thus, India is looking to make adequate storage facilities and regulate the temperature conditions to store the vaccine and maintain its efficacy simultaneously.

Moreover, companies like Koolex, Blue Dart, and DHL are performing extensive work in the field of vaccine storage to produce containment areas to store the vaccine before they are distributed in the market for public usage.

Importance of Air-Cargo Delivery

Air-Cargo Delivery has assumed a huge amount of significance when the news of the vaccine trials was regulated in the market. Through analysis and study, it was estimated that around 8000 Boeing 747's were required to transport the vaccine from the area of manufacturing and production to the area of distribution where the vaccines can be sold to the public in the market.

According to the research, over 25 percent of the volume are often connected by surface mode in and around manufacturing countries, the demand for air cargo capacity which would result in approximately 12000 large freighters for primary and booster of vaccines.


Bharat Thakkar, Co-Founder & Joint MD, Zeus Air Services admits, “Air cargo is the primary solution that governments and pharma companies will engage to deliver the vaccines. Bharat Thakkar continues with a statement that the team is working on the air-cargo capacity to control large volumes of vaccines with the standardized services that require the active/passive along with the provision for end-to-end tracking of the shipment.

Moreover, this is to understand the need for reefer transportation. The team has started collaborating with a few reputed GDP/ISO certified vendors who can cater to Pan India transportation with their dedicated fleets.

Cargo Transport will be facilitated by the presence of well-regulated air transport operation systems that would enable the easy transport of vaccines from one place to another. The biggest advantage attained through air-transport will be the saving of vital time as the vaccines would be required on an immediate basis in areas where the virus has afflicted people the most.

Transporting vaccines to nook and corner of the country

The team is facing a lot of crucial challenges in terms of vaccine temperature. The challenge is to distribute vaccines to various countries. The very most important functions of transporting vaccines include the creation of a supply chain infrastructure, ensuring a logistical analytical cell, creating distribution units, and improved organizational structures.

The functions are having been in-making some advanced improvements that can result in the availability of the vaccines easily across the world. The sole aim of the government authorities is to ensure the vaccines should reach every individual who needs it.

Conclusion

Preparations to create adequate infrastructure is ongoing. It is expected that we might hear some good news by this year and can expect a vaccine to eliminate this virus to be out in the market by early next year. However, whether the vaccine would be efficient in resolving the crisis would be very crucial.
